How to Judge a New Ranch Gadget's Evidence

A 5-question test before you spend money on frontier tech.

New ranch tech arrives weekly. Some of it (solar pumping, virtual fencing) changes operations. Some (copper "electroculture" antennas) has failed controlled tests. Use these questions before buying.

  1. Is there an independent, controlled study? Vendor testimonials aren't evidence. A 2025 PLOS One trial found no yield benefit from electroculture copper rods.
  2. Was it tested on ranches like yours? Bovaer is FDA-reviewed for lactating dairy cows, not grazing beef; an Australian pasture trial is promising but early.
  3. Is there a plausible mechanism? Reviews of "structured water" found mostly descriptive, mixed evidence.
  4. What does it cost per year, all in? Count subscriptions, data, batteries and replacements.
  5. Can you try it small? Rent, borrow, or run a trial paddock first. Grants like Western SARE Farmer/Rancher fund on-ranch trials.
