Livestock Guardian Dogs and Virtual Fences: The Dual-Boundary Setup

Keep cattle in moving paddocks and let guardian dogs patrol the whole ranch, without letting them leave it.

Don't put cattle collars on dogs. Halter, eShepherd, Monil and Vence are built for cattle, and Nofence's terms limit its collars to cattle, sheep and goats. UCCE Central Sierra is researching virtual fence on LGDs, but that's a trial, not an approved use.

The idea

Two independent boundaries. Cattle wear livestock virtual fence collars set to small paddocks that move with your grazing plan. Guardian dogs wear a GPS dog collar set to one large boundary around the whole ranch, so they can patrol beyond the stock but don't leave the property. The two systems are separate devices with separate apps.

Best fit for rural foothill ranches with patchy cell: SpotOn. Its boundary is enforced on the collar from GPS, a whole-ranch polygon has no size cap, and no subscription is required. Garmin is the tracking-only choice when you want to see where dogs are at night.

Setting it up

  1. Draw the dog boundary at least 30 ft inside your property line and 15+ ft from roads, so a dog has room to turn.
  2. Add keep-out zones (house yard, road frontage).
  3. Start with tone and vibration only. Keep static off or very low, because a correction during a predator chase can make a dog break off or bolt.
  4. Bond pups to stock first. Collars don't replace bonding (UCCE).
  5. Plan charging: daily for SpotOn and Halo. Rotate collars if dogs work round the clock.
  6. Ask both vendors to confirm the two systems don't interfere.
